Broken Brights
Allie wheezes a little as she carts her round body up the hill. Jasper runs to and fro, sniffing the leaves, frolicking alongside Allie and John.
He's much too energetic for the couple, really. A cheery terrier who never seems to get tired, paired with a retired couple who haul themself out of the house once every evening to get some exercise.
Allie's ankles ache. She hated the walk. Anyone with an ounce of fitness couldn't have seen how- they always walk through gorgeous bush and track, canopies of leaves filtering the sunset onto their fair skin. But Allie can never focus on what's around her. She just struggles along up the hill, looking at the ground. Walking downhill was even worse- it just played havoc on her knees.
She did it for John, really. A heart attack in his fifties had meant they had to take all the necessary steps to prevent it happening again. Allie glances at Jasper as he chases a gecko through the brown leaves.
She would never be able to look after Jasper on her own.
John mutters something and for the first time in ten minutes, Allie truly looks up.
Ahead, coming down the hill at a controlled pace, an odd looking girl.
Suddenly, everything seems very surreal to Allie.
The overhanging branches of the trees, the light coming from behind the frail figure ahead. Perhaps because she hasn't looked up in so long. Perhaps she temporarily forgot the world was there.
The girl is inadequately dressed for the cool night. Had Allie's daughter even gone out in so little on such a night- well, she wouldn't have. There's no way Allie would have let her! Chloe had always been very stubborn though. Probably wouldn't have listened.
The creature isn't even wearing shoes. Holding jandals in her left hand that wouldn't have made much difference if she wore them, really. Her toes press into the dewy ground with each step.
John doesn't pay much attention to the girl, just whistles to Jasper and looks past her. Allie just can't quite work her out. She scowls at her youth, her obvious stubborn nature, her stupidity.
The girl is wearing a dress that doesn't reach her knees, with straps too long so her bra is almost entirely visible and extremely obvious. A white lace bra contrasting against a baggy black dress. Her toes are painted a chipped pink and she has music in her ears.
Allie scowls at the bruises on the girl's legs as she passes them.
"Hello," comes the quite voice from beneath the shaggy hair. The air is cold and as she speaks a small cloud of mist escapes her lips.
Allie mumbles an answer, and looks down at the ground again.
