Iris

It began in a bar, (as most of these things do) with a handshake across the table, as he sniggered and she shook.
But little did they know, what was to follow over the next few months was not just a single game of pool in a dimly lit bar.

On first glance at his opponent he received a slap on the back from his mates and took another sip of his beer.
He smirked over the rim of his glass at the petite thing standing in front of him.
"Doesn't she know this is a tournament?" laughed one of his accomplices.

The jibes continued as the fragile thing walked over to him, and he hardly heard her name as they shook hands to signal the start of their little game.

He sized her up, and grinned again as his friends pointed out he'd probably graduated by the time she'd started high school.

But the smirking stopped there.

What followed was a slight panic, as she sunk ball after ball.

The shots started off as relatively easy ones, but due to his intitial expectations, his respect grew for her anyway.
But when she started making impossible shots and sinking two in one go, he began to swallow his pride.

It was her turn to smirk as he panicked and claimed she'd committed a foul.

"I didn't think I had," she replied calmly, "and to be honest you've got nothing to worry about, because you've got this anyway, but I don't mind." She held out the pool cue towards him in a somewhat patronizing manner.

This subtle suggestion that perhaps he was scared was enough to cause him to back off and insist that she carry on, and he breathed a sigh of relief as she missed her next shot.

He noticed her tense look as he sunk his last couple of balls, and with them both down to the black, he was uncertain as to whether luck or skill had got her this far.

But as he'd managed to catch up, he quickly sealed the deal and sunk the black, his heart racing slightly, knowing that it was a close victory.
He shook her hand and carried on, not giving her another thought.

Little did he know, in less than two weeks, this girl five years his junior would beat him mercilessly, and prove that a cat may look at a king, after all.
